Summary | From the study of traumatic injuries referred on the Iliad epic, we note the following:
1) The total number of traumatic injuries is 173 (5 Gods, 135 Trojans and 33 Achaeans). Particularly in order of appearance: thoracic injuries (33), head (26), neck (26), abdomen (23), upper limbs (19), mixed pelvis and lower limbs (10), skin (8), special (7), undefined (5) and genitals injuries (1). 2) The number of warriors suffering the injuries is 151. The difference (22) from the total number of injuries mentioned above is due to: a) some persons suffered more than one injury (18) and b) in certain occasions gods were injured (4). 3) 137 injuries were lethal and concerned 119 Trojans and 18 Achaeans. The spear was the murderous weapon most used. The frequency of deaths according to their body location: chest trauma (31), head (25), neck (25), abdomen (23), mixed (15), upper limbs (9), undefined (5), pelvis and lower limbs (2), genitals (1), special (1), skin (0). 4) The detailed description of each injury, lethal or not, constitutes a circumstantial “forensic report”, the first of mythical medical era. 5) The writer was well aware of the anatomical and functional role of the human organs, a knowledge that impresses. He knew the exact location of each organ and its contribution to the smooth function of the human body. 6) The presence of a notable health infrastructure in the Achaean military camp nevertheless. The presence of a doctor, as well as a surgeon and people with medical expertise indicates the responsibility of the troop captains to provide good medical care to their soldiers. 7) Every action in the battlefield from both troops was very well organized. The thought that prevailed was no waste of strength and application of strategy. Evidence that prove the existence of a war training program. 8) The death of a Trojan warrior mentioned twice during the epic, caused from different persons under different circumstances, indicates that the Iliad is not the masterpiece of one writer. |
