Περίληψη – Summary
The increase in morbidity from various forms of cancer, early diagnosis, effective new anti-cancer therapies, the significant increase in life expectancy and the increased proportion of older people in the total population result in an increase in cancer survivors, i.e., patients who have fully recovered from their disease and try to live a normal life.
Cancer as well as oncological treatments can have a serious impact on the quality of life of cancer patients, not only during the treatments, but also years after their completion. Patients try to adjust to the experience of cancer but are also associated with problems/needs that can be physical (reduced physical ability, fatigue), psychological (anxiety, depression, insecurity), social (isolation, unemployment) etc.
In Cyprus, there is a lack of data on the needs of cancer survivors. In addition, there is no survivorship care plan for patients and no evaluation of rehabilitation services.
In summary, the rehabilitation of the Cypriot cancer patient is considered unquestionably necessary and the Ministry of Health and the patient associations should design programs, develop clinical practice protocols, and invest in research so that patients can be successfully reintegrated into the society.
