Περίληψη – Summary
Background: Worldwide, a steady rise of cesarean section (CS) rates in high- and middle-income countries over the last decades have initiated concern about the overuse of CS. Caesarean delivery upon maternal request (CDMR) involves a planned primary CS in the absence of a straight forward obstetrical or medical indication to avoid a vaginal birth. Maternal autonomy to choose a planned CS has been a matter of debate among medical professionals and ethicists and guidelines vary between countries regarding how to manage health care professionals these requests. Methods: A review search of electronic databases concerning medical care was held on May 2021 in order to detect published recommendations which describe the proper consultation for non-indicated maternal request on caesarean section. Result: A total of 4 papers which describes the appropriate consultation for women demanding caesarean section without medical indication from: the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the World Health Organization (WHO), The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) were included. Conclusion: The caesarean section on women’s request is a topic of international debate in maternal and child health, especially in the light of current growing global concerns over the rising trend of CS. Further research is needed to draw upon direct evidence which will make patient counseling more effective
