Περίληψη – Summary
Recent knowledge acquired the last decade indicates that acne vulgaris is a disorder characterized by excess inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit. This is generated in part by the interaction of Propionebacterium acnes with the cellular components of the unit, namely keratinocytes, sebocytes and tissue macrophages. These interactions are affected through binding of specific molecular structures of P. acnes on Toll-like receptors (TLRs). This leads to overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines by keratinocytes, sebocytes and tissue macrophages but also to proliferation of keratinocytes and to over-production of metalloproteinases that destroy tissues. Case-control studies have recently shown that single nucleotide polymorphisms of genes encoding for TLRs and for cytokines may offer susceptibility for the development of acnes but also they can modulate the phenotype of the disease.
