Abstract: 6 Introduction: The impact of Winter’s research and the establishment of the theory and concept of moist wound healing radically changed the way that wounds are treated and contributed to the initiation of further research and materials development. Objective: To evaluate the evidence of Winters theory of moist wound healing, and how this has influenced mod- ern day clinical practice. Methodology: The scientific literature was reviewed through Cinahl, Pub-med, EBSCO, Medline and Google scholar, 51 scientific articles where identified. The arti- cles where chosen due to their correlation with the ob- jective under study and their scientific relevance. Result: Whilst the research provides relatively convinc- ing results to support the principals of moist wound heal- ing, subsequent research has not been able to provide such dramatic results. The moist vapour transmission rate of each dressing and the specific needs of each wound should be addressed upon the choice of treat- ment in clinical environment. Lastly moist wound healing promotes less pain during dressing changes and pre- vents the development of pathogen microorganisms. Conclusion: Winter’s work and subsequent research were pivotal and has demonstrated that moist wound healing holds beneficial abilities towards wound healing. This has influenced the development and implementa- tion of modern techniques and equipment in wound care. |
