Περίληψη –Summary

Falls are a common cause of morbidity, hospital and nursing home admissions and mortality in the elderly population with incidence nearly 30% for individuals aged ≥ 65 years and almost 40% for those >85 years. There are several risk factors for falls in the elderly like: environmental risks, cognitive status, history of previous falls, age > 65 years, lower limb pros- thesis, use of wheelchair or assistive devices, health problems ( e.g. anemia, arthritis, postop- erative conditions, difficulty with gait, hearing, visual or vascular disease, impaired balance, sleeplessness, decreased lower extremity strength, orthostatic hypotension, postprandial blood sugar changes, neoplasms, neuropathy, acute illness, foot problems, urinary urgency, vertigo) and medications. Many multicenter trials have been held in the past 20 years to propose and evaluate the effectiveness of diverse preven- tive interventions for falls in elderly living in com- munity, but also in acute care hospitals and long term care institutions. Reviewing the literature, the most widely approved preventive evidence- based interventions include group or home-based exercises, environment assessment and modification, multifactorial and institutional interventions.
