Introduction Critical dynamic coronary artery stenoses may impair myocardial blood perfusion, leading to a variety of syndromes, including rest angina, exercise-induced angina, myocardial infarction with or without coronary thrombosis, cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death. Such dynamic stenoses may be the result of coronary artery spasms (CAS) or simply mild vasomotor changes in arteries, bearing severe eccentric obstructing lesions; sometimes, even the normal constrictor tone may suffice to impair blood supply, if the lesions are heavy enough (1, 2). Thus, vasodilating compounds are of interest not only in order to defeat coronary or other arterial spasms of unknown prevalence, but also in order to improve blood flow in organically stenosed arteries. Furthermore, the concomitant effect of the same compounds on the platelet function and haemorrheology is of no less clinical importance, but outside of the limits of this review.
