Summary The complex mucosal immune system with its immunocompetent cells (macrophages, T and B lymphocytes) plays a key role in the induction of immune responses. The functional co-operation between the intestinal immune system known as the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and that of the lung called the bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) has made possible a new therapeutic concept for oral immunization, through the GALT, to overcome infections in the respiratory tract. Based on this new concept Broncho-Vaxom, an orally administered a cellular immunotherapy containing bacterial fractions, has been developed. Broncho-Vaxom was found to improve the impaired immunity of the respiratory passages through restoration of the immune functions of the macrophages, the T and B lymphocytes. This was always accompanied by improvement of the clinical findings and an excellent tolerance.
