Summary | Ten samples of sewage were examined during a 5 months period (automn and winter 1988-89). Samples were taken from the sewage main collector of greater Athens (ca. 4 million population). The sewage contains wastes from houses: hospitals, industries, slaughterhouses and the rainfalls. From each specimen 5-15 well isolated colonies of E. coli were selected and transferred to nutrient broth. Cultures were tested for sensitivity to antibiotics with the Bauer-Kirby method. The following frequencies of resistance were observed: Streptomycin (S) 23, ampicillin (Amp) 20, tetracycline (Te) 18, carbenicillin (Car) 15, nalidixic acid (NA) 14, cephalothin (CF) 8, cephalortdine (CD) 7, trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole (SCT) 5, tobramycin (Tob) 3, gentamycin (CN) 1, amicacin (AIC) 1, chloramphenicol (C) 1: all strains were sensitive to cefotaxime (CTX) and to norfloxacin (Nor), 9 strains were resistant to 1 antibiotic, 6 to 2, 9 to 3, 1 to 4 and 5 to 5. Although the majority of the strains were sensitive to the 14 antibiotics and the occurrence of multiresistant to strains was low, the contamination of the environment with multiresistant strains cannot be excluded. Similar patterns of sensitivity or resistance of E. coli were found in sea waters | |
