Summary Free radicals are highly reactive chemical species and their involvement in biochemical reactions has been suggested for a long time. Especially oxygen free radicals in living organisms are implicated in several pathological conditions, such as aging, lipid peroxidation of cells membranes, arthritis, carcinogenesis, etc. A study of free radical production and processes in biological systems can be achieved in vitro and the last few years in vivo. The method of spin trapping was developed to “trap” the short-lived reactive free radicals at low concentrations in a biological environment. The spin traps, which are used, are nitroxides and nitrones. The spin trapping technique has been used in the last decade to identify the free radicals by ESR (Electron Spin Resonance) when the biological system is exposed to foreign chemicals. Studies in vivo can solve problems of great toxicological significance.
