Summary This study briefly reviews the published literature regarding the efficacy of isothiazolinone derivatives as preservatives in cosmetic preparations with regard to their influence on the formula stability. The dermatological problems caused by the isothiazolinones are examined and some structure-activity relationships concerning their allergic reactivity are also described.
