Summary The methodology of transgenic animals, i.e. the introduction of foreign DNA in fertilized oocytes and thus the dissemination of the incorporated DNA in all cells of the developing organism derived from the oocyte, has gained primary importance, both for the solution of problems of basic biological research and for application in Biotechnology and Medicine. In the basic sciences, transgenic animals give significant information to problems dealing with mechanisms of gene expression, of cellular differentiation and embryogenesis. Significant are the biotechnological applications for the quantitative and qualitative improvement of livestock and milk and for the production of pharmaceuticals. In Medicine, transgenic animals provide models of human diseases, for the study of action of viruses and for the study of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis.
