Summary Supportive-expressive therapy has been reported to influence survival and recurrence among women with cancer, particularly breast cancer. Such as association is biologically plausible and several possible mechanisms have been proposed. The author summarizes the results of 26 studies about the possible impact of psychological coping styles (including fighting spirit, helplessness/hopelessness, denial and avoidance) on survival, recurrences and quality of life in patients with breast cancer. The majority of the studies of these topics, that investigated fighting spirit or helplessness-hopelessness found no significant associations with survival or recurrence. The evidence that other factors play an important part was also weak. On the other hand, supportive-expressive therapy improves mood and the perception of pain, particularly in women who are initially more distressed.
