Other Terms review article
Summary Subject of this literature review, is the impact of marihuana/cannabis abuse during pregnancy and their long-term consequences on the fetus. Prenatal marihuana use was significantly related to increased hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention symptoms and in a small sample of women who used marihuana during pregnancy, investigators found an increased incidence of meconium-stained fluid, abnormal labors and placental abruption. A larger epidemiologic study reported lower birth weights, increased preterm deliveries and more major malformations in infants of marihuana users. The studies of the effect of prenatal marihuana exposure on the newborn have produced conflicting results and marihuana has not been definitively implicated as a teratogenic agent in humans.
