Summary | This is an article review concerning observations derived from a research program dealing with digitalis interactions. The research was carried out in humans and animals. Digitalis interactions with substances of clinical interest at the level of plasma protein and tissue binding as well as observations on the so called endogenous digitalis like immunoreactive factor (5) were the main subjects of this experimental work, it was found that some Ca²+ entry blockers like verapamil increase digoxin plasma levels in humans. Antiarrhythmics amiodarone and diphenylhydantoin increased slightly digoxin serum levels in mice. Amiodarone also increased digitoxin serum levels in rabbits. Propafenone reduced in vitro heart digoxin uptake in rabbits while amiodarone and mexiletine failed to do so. Piracetam’s action was biphasic and was depended on drug’s concentration. Aminoglycosides increased heart digoxin uptake while they reduced it at the level of the senal tissue. The RIA method reassessed the existence of an endogenous digoxin like immunoreactive factor (DLIF) in the serum of rabbits while it was found for the first time similar factor for digitoxin (DtLIF). Amiodarone did not influence the levels of DLIF and DtLIF. | |
