Summary	The presence of the phosphonamide bond in the peptides Z-Xaa-PO(OH)-NH- CH₂CO-Pro-Nie (Z-Xaa=Z-Phe or Z-Leu) has a marked effect on the side-chain orientation of the Xaa residue preceding the phosphonamide bond as it is depicted by ¹H (³¹P) NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the preferred orientation of the side- chain appears strongly dependent on its nature. The obtained data from the studied compounds which are slow binding inhibitors of zinc bacterial collagenases suggest that energy barriers existing in the phosphonamide inhibitors might be involved in their binding kinetics.
