Summary An experimental study, as far as possible complete, of the ursolic acid (URSA), a natural ingredient of a large number of self-sown medicinal herbs thriven in the district of Epirus (Greece), was presented. The study was divided in three parts. In the first part, the traditional pharmacotherapy in Epirus was historically surveyed and the out-doors and in-doors medicinal plants, sources of URSA, were reminded, in the second part, the isolation of URSA from leaves and glowers of rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis L, Labiatae), as well as a physicochemical identification test [elemental analysis, mp, spectral (UV, IR), chromatographic (TLC, HPLC)] was performed and then a spectrophotometric and two HPLC-methods for the quantitative determination of the URSA were formed and proposed here for first time. In the last part of the study, the therapeutic spectrum of the URSA was shown and a randomised number of references from the respective bibliography was quoted in the order to document the therapeutic activity of URSA.
