| Introduction | It has been established (1) that degradation products play a very important but not always recognized role in allergic reactions to penicillins. The penicillin allergy is complex in itself and involves several antigenic determinants, but the main responsible cause of allergic reactions is considered the presence of polymeric degradation products (2) formed either during production of active principles (3) or during inadequate storage of penicillin substances and preparations (1). These substances, so-called aminopenicillin oligomers, are formed through a chain process involving nucleophilic attach of the side-chain amino group in one aminopenicillin molecule on the reactive β-lactam moiety of a second molecule (4).
