Summary In most organs, oxytocin and vasopressin produce contraction of smooth muscles. Our study examined effects of oxytocin and 8-L-lysine-vasopressin on isolated preparations of isthmic and ampullar segments of human Fallopian tube. Both oxytocin and 8-L-lysine vasopressin produced concentration-dependent relaxation of isolated preparations previously contracted by histamine, oxytocin being more potent. Considering high number of oxytocin and vasopressin receptors, confirmed by other studies, in Fallopian tubes, relaxing effects of neurohypophyseal hormones could be important for physiological transport of ova from peritoneal to uterine cavity.
