Introduction The Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) was originally thought to function as a classic endocrine system (1). Over the past decade, a local (tissue) RAS has been identified in various tissues, including vessel wall, heart, brain and kidneys (2). Angiotensin II (ANG II), the active component of RAS, is a linear octapeptide, which plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular homeostasis and has been extensively studied since its discovery 50 years ago (3). Not only it is one of the most potent vasoconstrictive agents, but it is also a growth factor, implicated in cardiac and vascular hypertrophy, as well as in the ventricular remodelling following myocardial infarction (4).
