Summary | The role of sex hormones in cancerogenesis of the endometrium is well known, however the mechanism of hormone involvement in the malignant process is now beginning to be revealed. This is in part due to the progress in understanding the molecular mode of action of steroid hormones and the role of the steroid receptors in this process. In this review article the structure and structure/function relationships of the sex steroid receptors will be presented as well as the current concepts on the molecular action of steroid hormones. The cellular factors involved in the physiological cell replication process and the effects of sex hormones, by way of their receptors, on the expression of these factors, will be briefly described. The derangement of the normal regulation of the cell cycle, leading to the malignant state, by mutations induced by carcinogens will be discussed. | |
