Summary | The experimental part of the present paper begins with the successful application of the Soxhlet’s technique, an outdated but at the same time simple, rapid and efficient method for the extraction of Hypericin (HPCN) from the medicinal herb Hypericum perforatum L (Common St John’s wort, HPPF) and then a study of the physicochemical properties (spectrophotometric: λ1 max = 590 nm and λ2 max=550 nm; spectrofluorometric: λex = 470 nm and λem = 585 nm; TLC: Rf (HPCN): 0.60 and Rf (ψ-HPCN): 0.64) in order to determine exactly the identity, the purity and the concentration of the resulted ethanolic extracts was performed. Finally, the paper is concluded by a detailed quotation and discussion on the plurality and the versatility of the therapeutic applications of the examined herb (HPPF), and its pharmacologically active ingredient (HPCN), on a wide spectrum of diseases of various etiology and gravity. | |
