Summary The phototoxicity and the photoirritation have been defined in the past through various methods of experimentation on animals and volunteers in order for some substances to be safely used by humans. The methods requiring the use of animals are disadvantageous, because, on the one hand, they demand the killing of lots of animals and on the other they have a high cost and the application may be dangerous for the volunteers. In our method, we use ultraviolet radiation (UV-A) in order to radiate the substances we are studying during their diffusion from a paper disc placed upon agar freshly seeded with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Fleisch-man’s yeast) (1). As positive control we use 8- Metgoxypsoralen (8-MOP) at a concentration of 10-2 %. The creation of dear zones of inhibition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast development suggests the phototoxic effect of the substance we are studying. Our method is inexpensive, simple and gives results within a short period of time, which is in 61 hours. The correlation with positive human phototoxicity results is excellent, so that the protection of the consumers is successful.
