Other Terms review article
Summary The subject of the above research is the finding out certain prognostic markers for the giant cell tumor of bone according to the bibliographic references of the last thirty-five years (1963-1998). A last decade analytical review of 53 biopsies of giant cell tumor derived from Asklipiion and Saint Paul Accident Hospitals showed that the higher incidence of the disease (86%) is appearing in the epiphyses of the long tubular bones with a slight predominance in women (1,4/1). The recurrence rate was 23%, the period of the tumor reappearance ranged from 4 months to 3 years and the malignant transformation was 13%. Curettage with or without bone cement packing (53%) and wide en block excision (40%) was the performed therapy. According to the study of the above series and the review of the recent literature it is obvious that the prognosis of giant cell tumor of bone is unpredictable if it is based on the histological picture alone. Therefore, the evaluation of the clinical course of giant cell tumor must be related to the a) histological picture, b) location, c) size and tumor aggressiveness, d) type and time of applied therapy and e) time and frequency of tumor recurrence.
