Summary Parkinson’s disease (PD) remains a common and disabling condition affecting old people. At present, pharmacological and surgical approaches to the problem are limited. Consequently, alternative therapeutic procedures are important to be considered. The present descriptive study was designed to investigate the relation of PD patients with physical therapy (PT) and pharmacotherapy. Thirty-eight patients (19 men, 19 women) with idiopathic PD were enrolled in the study, with a mean age±SD 73±9 years (range 54-88), mean duration of the disease±SD 8±6 years (range 0-24) and mean Hoehn & Yahr score 2,5 (range 1-5). Patients completed a novel questionnaire and assessed by the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). 40% of the patients appeared to ignore the term “Physical therapy”. 8% had received PT for their PD without feeling any benefit. 21% had had PT for disorders other than PD; 62% of them appeared to be satisfied. 26% of the patients believed that PT could be helpful for their PD, 23% believed that it could not be helpful and 51% had no opinion. 69% of the patients expressed their will to try PT for their PD in the future, 17% were not willing to try and 14% had no opinion. Only 3 patients (8%) were not having any drug treatment. Levodopa was the most common drug used. We conclude that the relation of this group of patients with PT was very loose. Large well-designed randomize controlled trials are needed to demonstrate the efficacy of PT on PD.
