Summary Some children and adolescents develop intense anxiety about going to school and resist all efforts to get them to attend. Such reactions are generally called school phobias and in most cases they are thought to reflect a problem of attachment to a parent, with accompanying separation anxiety. This paper reviews the literature on school phobia and contributes to a better understanding of the underlying psychological processes that are involved in the development of the disorder as well as its management by child therapists and the school personnel. Accompanied by examples from a clinical case, this paper presents a view of school phobia as an emotional problem of the child, which requires multiple interventions on different levels; at the individual child level, but also at the level of relationships between the child and his/her parents and between  thefamily and the school.
