Summary | The purpose of this study was to detect the prevalence of HBV in the health care personnel of two regional hospitals, in order to collect valuable data on the immunization status of the health care personnel and take measures for the prevention of HBV transmission, by reinforcing the vaccine uptake from the vulnerable persons. In this study has been documented the frequency of the serological testing for hepatitis B surface antigen and antibodies against hepatitis B, through an anonymous and self report questionnaire that was distributed to the health care personnel. Seventy three (96%) of the participants of this study, re- ported that they were tested for HbsAg without prior active immunization. Among them 1.4% was found to have a positive HbsAg result and 35.6% of them positive antibodies against hepatitis B. The factor that contributed to the performance of the HbsAg test, was the prevention of the disease (58.9%) while 15% reported a needle-stick injury during nursing intervention. Nursing assistants reported a higher percentage of positive antibodies against hepatitis B, as opposed to 57.7% of the registered nurses and those with less than 10 years work experience. From the findings of the present study it is obvious that there is a need to educate health care workers to take all the precautions against hepatitis B infection during their invasion procedures. It is also essential to provide counselling, adequate support and retraining services for the prevention of the disease. | |
