Keywords Fetal alcohol syndrome, pregnancy, neonatal unit.
Other Terms review article
Summary The subject of this literature review is the fetal alcohol syndrome (F.A.S.). It will describe the effects that the ingestion of large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy, have upon the developing fetus from a physiological perspective. Alcohol is a potent teratogen in humans, and prenatal alcohol exposure is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. The physiological problems encountered by the neonate, who has been exposed to high levels of in utero alcohol, necessitating admission to the neonatal unit, will be addressed. As the neonatal unit delivers a holistic approach to care this review will also describe the psychological and sociological effects of F.A.S. on the newborn infants and their families. It will also aim to discuss how these factors influence the planning and management of care delivered to the neonate who has F.A.S. whilst being nursed on the neonatal unit.
