Summary | AETHLIOS is an International long distance (180 km) race from Ancient Nemea to Olympia that takes place in Greece every second year. The present study refers to the athletes group of the game held in May 23-24 2008. Regular physical activity (endurance training, ET) has a strong positive link with cardiovascular health. 68 subjects participated in the study, 57 Men and 9 Women. Estimations of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, and uric acid were performed before and after the competition. Additionally atheromatic index was evaluated. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, atheromatic index TC/HDL and lipoprotein index LDL /HDL were post-race reduced in both male and female athletes. In contrast HDL-cholesterol and uric acid were increased by the running activity. It may be concluded exercise plays an important protective role against atherosclerosis. | |
