Summary | Nurses often find satisfaction in assisting people who experience extremely stressful events, yet the stress associated with these efforts can have a negative impact on helpers. In the presence of empathetic caring, nurses can suffer from Secondary Traumatic Stress/Compassion Fatigue. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the risk of Secondary Traumatic Stress/Compassion Fatigue (STS/CF) and Burnout (BO) and the potential for Compassion Satisfaction (CS) among nursing staff working in psychiatric units. An additional goal was to test the relationship of these three constructs to each other. The Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL R-IV) and a demographic and work related characteristics questionnaire were distributed to psychiatric nurses (N=174) in 12 Public Hospitals in Greece. The majority of participants (88.5%) suffered from “moderate” to high levels of STS/CF. The risk of BO was considerably high for 49.4% of respondents, while only 8% of nurses expressed high potential for CS. High prevalence of STS/CF in our sample indicates that potentially large numbers of psychiatric nurses may be experiencing the negative effects of Secondary Traumatic Stress. Future research must focus on factors preventing high levels of STS/CF. | |
