Summary | The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of Anorexia Nervosa in female Greek population and to detect the degree of knowledge about it. The investigated sample included 400 women (n=400) aged 13-51 years, from South Attica, which completed anonymously a specially structured closed-type questionnaire concerning anorexia nervosa, its symptoms, causes and treatment, the degree of satisfaction with their body image, the frequency of anorexia nervosa in their environment and their eating and dieting attitudes. This study shows that 245 out of 400 participants (61.25%) were satisfied with their body image despite its imperfections and 307 out of 400 (76.75%) indicated that they had never been obese. A percentage of 88.0% (352/400) stated that they knew the meaning of the term “anorexia nervosa”, but only 79.25% (317/400) were capable of answering the question concerning the symptoms of the disorder (statistically significant difference, p=0,001). 73.25% of the participants believe that anorexia nervosa cannot be cured by itself, in contrast with 10.75% who think otherwise. Regarding professional help-seeking, 49.5% of the participants answered that they knew where to turn to for support and treatment, in contrast with 50.5% who answered negatively, while the majority of negative responses (56.36%) were observed in the 13-20 age group. As for the main risk factors for the development of anorexia nervosa, 8.25% of the participants believe that these involve personal disappointment, 21.0% social and cultural stereotypes, 6.25% family problems, 63.75% all the above mentioned causes and 0.75% other factors such as stress. 8.0% of the participants stated that they had anorexia nervosa at some stage of their life, while 18.8% referred to a family member with similar or emotional disorder. This study shows that the investigated woman population is aware of anorexia nervosa, but they ignore important parameters concerning identification, symptoms, implications and treatment of the disorder. The incidence of the disorder found in this study indicates the need for better and continuous information especially to the young population, and the importance of effective measures for its prevention and treatment. | |
