Summary | The purpose of this study was to examine, the antioxidant properties of anthocyanins from Vaccinium angustifolium wild fruits (blueberries) and their in vitro effect on Aβ1-40 aggregation. The antioxidant properties of the anthocyanin-rich blueberry extract were determined by ferric-reducing antioxidant power and trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity, while its effect on Aβ aggregation was studied by a thioflavine T-based fluorescence assay and by agarose gel electrophoresis. Results showed that the extract not only possesses high antioxidant properties, but also exhibited a significant inhibition of Aβ aggregation (up to 70% at the concentration of 15 µg/mL). Our findings suggest the possible use of V. angustifolium anthocyanins for inhibition of aggregation and deposition of Aβ in the human brain. | |
