Summary Many of the activities of every-day life can be intense stress factors. Stress and nicotine use increase cholesterol levels in human and experimental animals. Lowering blood levels of total cholesterol and fibrinogen or increasing of HDL-C retards the development of atheroschlerotic process, CHD (coronary heart disease) and reduces morbidity and mortality. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis and ischaemic heart disease. Antioxidant factors and a diet rich in monounsaturated (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated (PUFAs) fatty acids may prevent or restore the damages caused by the excess offer of saturated lipid regime. The purpose of this study was: To investigate and compare the effects of various  environmental conditions as stress (cold water swimming of 20 days duration), lipid diets and cigarette smoke (animals exposed to cigarette smoke for 15 min during 20 days) on serum lipid parameters and fibrinogen  in male Wistar rats.
