Summary AIM: The aim of this study is to examine the smoking frequency relating to alcohol consumption among nursing students. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study was conducted among 345 nursing students, 115 from T.E.I. of Athens, 115 from the University of Nothumbria at Newcastle-UK, and 115 from the North Carelia Polytechnic of Joensuu-Finland. A special anonymous questionnaire, containing strictly personal questions, was completed by nursing students. The questionnaire included close type questions relevant to the subject concept and to the biosocial personal characteristics of the nursing students. The statistical analysis was performed by the SPSS package, and the x2 test and criterion t-test. RESULTS: The results showed that the Greek nursing students smoked at a higher percentage 51.3%, compared to the Finnish 34.8% and to the British 27.8%. Α percentage 11.31% of Greek smokers, smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day, while equivalent percentages for the Finnish the British were 0.87% and 6.09%. The 3.48% of the Greeks, the 6% of the Finnish and 6.96% of the British have started smoking before the age of 14 years old. With regard to the family smoking rate among the Greek fathers was 19.4%, among mothers 12.2%, brothers and sisters 21.4% and friends and their partners 41.8%. For Finnish fathers the rate was 18.8%, mothers 13.5%, brothers and sisters 14.1%, and friends and partners 42.9%. For British fathers the rate was 15.2%, mothers 10.1%, brothers and sisters 13.9%, and friends and partners 42.4%. For British students the preferable smoking rate for cigarettes from their own country was 81.2%, for Finnish students 30.2% and for Greek students 16.9%. Cigarettes with filter were smoked by the 95% of Finnish, 89.8% of the Greek students and by the 81.2% of the British. Forty five percent (45%) of Finnish students said that they were able to cease smoking, 42.3% of Greek and 25% of British students did the same. Referring to the alcohol consumption the British lead over in at a percentage of 67.83% against 14.8% for Finnish and 17.3% for Greeks. Systematic drinkers, those drinking more than two years time, were 10.4% of Greek, 7% of Finnish and 47.8% of British. Greek student nurses preferred, in order of frequency, beer at 23.9%, wine at 19% and whisky at 10.3%. Finnish preferred wine at 24.8%, beer at 23.9%, gin at 12.39% and vodka for 8.97%, while British students preferred wine at 33.6%, beer at 17.6% and vodka at 10.5%. Conclusion: Stable findings show that the highest percentage of Greek and Finnish students are smokers whereas, English students prove to consume the highest percentage of alcohol. Smoking is not related to the consumption of alcohol and Greek and Finnish smokers are not necessarily great consumers of alcohol. On the other hand, English student who frequent consume alcohol are not heavy smokers.
