Summary | The Corticotropin Releasing Factor (CRF) system is expressed in the human and rat liver. Aim of the present study was to unfold a possible regulating role of the CRF system in hepatocellular apoptosis and to investigate the molecular mechanism involved. Liver apoptosis was induced in rats by surgery for hepatic duct ligation causing obstructive jaundice, as shown by elevated expression levels of the early apoptotic marker M30 demonstrated by immunohistochemistry and ELISA in serum levels. Administration of the non-selective CRF receptor antagonist astressin inhibited M30 elevation, in contrast to the specific type 2 CRF receptor antagonist astressin 2B that did not show this action, indicating a CRF1 mediated effect. These results show a role of the CRF receptors in the apoptosis regulating process. The exact molecular mechanism involved needs further investigation. | ||
