Summary | The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible differences in the pharmacokinetic parameters of doxorubicin, between men and women. Generally, the biologic basis of differences in pharmacokinetics (PKs) between the two sexes concern four major issues contributing to inter-individual variability: bioavailability, distribution, metabolism and elimination. In order to examine these factors, sex-variations in body weight, plasma volume, plasma protein levels and cytochrome P450 activity were included in this study. Blood samples were collected before and after treatment with doxorubicin and specific pharmacokinetic parameters such as the area under the curve (AUC), clearance (CL) and half-life (T1/2) were determined using WinNonlin, (Pharsight Corporation, Palo Alto, CA, USA). The results showed that clearance of doxorubicin was less efficient in women. On the basis of these findings, we attempted a review of other studies concerning pharmacokinetic differences between men and women. | ||
