Other Terms Review article
Summary The results of many recent studies are indicative of an impaired antioxidant defense system in a number of psychiatric conditions, and furthermore this alteration has often been postulated as a possible mechanism for neuronal damage. However, it is not clear yet whether this is due to the pathophysiology of the illness or is a result of medication. The present study aimed to examine the effect of long-term antipsychotic treatment and furthermore to record if any differences exist between conventional and atypical antipsychotics with regard to the examined factors. As it was proven, long-term administration of conventional and atypical antipsychotics may produce similar effects in the antioxidant defense system of all patients, regardless the diagnosis.
