Summary Male Wistar rats underwent aortic denervation (AON) or sham operation under urethane anesthesia. We examined changes in systolic blood pressure over a period of two hours after completion of the procedure. Blood pressure measurement was achieved via iliolumbal artery cannulation. After two hours, rats were sacrificed, the brain was sectioned in specific levels corresponding to amygdala, dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus and motor cortex and examined for dead neurons under light microscope. Aortic denervation didn’t cause acute alterations in systolic blood pressure. Quantification of the density of dead neurons revealed significantly greater number of dead neurons in motor cortex and amygdala of AON rats, compared to Sham operated rats. Considering doromedial hypothalamic nucleus, statistical analysis showed significant lower number of dead neurons in AON group, compared to SHAM group. In conclusion, aortic denervation induces acute neuronal damage in specific brain regions.
