Summary Ribosomal proteins are considered integral structural components of ribosomes contributing to protein synthesis. Evidence now exists to indicate that several ribosomal proteins can also regulate specific cellular processes, suggesting that these proteins can act as multi-functional entities. Previously, we have studied the potential functional role of mouse ribosomal protein S5 (rpS5) in erythroid differentiation of murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells by establishing permanent cell lines via stable transfection of mouse rpS5 cDNA and expression of rpS5 gene constitutively. MEL cells transfected with rpS5 cDNA exhibited a delay in the onset of erythroid differentiation program. In this study, we extended these observations and applied flow cytometry to investigate the potential role of rpS5 in apoptosis of differentiating MEL cells.
