| Summary | To assess the practice of antibiotic prophylaxis in general surgery and the adverse reactions of antibiotics used. A prospective study was carried out in a surgical clinic of a large hospital of the National Health System in Athens, Greece. The patients were electively operated from January 2000 till October 2000. A questionnaire was fulfilled by the same surgeon-investigator concerning demographics, various aspects of antibiotic prophylaxis (category of antibiotic, route and timing of administration) and antibiotic-related adverse reactions. 898 patients were enrolled. There were four hundred and two clean and four hundred ninety-six clean-contaminated surgical operations. Antibiotic prophylaxis was performed in 97.5% cases (876/898).The most common prescribed antibiotic was cephalosporins (74.7%). Adverse reactions were reported in 48 patients. Eight antibiotics were responsible for these adverse reactions. In conclusion, published guidelines generally favor the usage of 1st and 2nd generation cephalosporins for surgical prophylaxis. Adverse reactions of antibiotics have to be evaluated. Interventions are necessary for improving the quality of surgical prophylaxis, reduced antibiotic use and costs without impairment of patient’s outcome. | |
