Summary Penicillins remained the most widely used antibiotics all over the world. Apart from their high allergenic potential, penicillins sometimes produce serious toxic effects. They can provoke epileptic attack and cause gastrointestinal disturbances, hepatitis, nephritis and some blood disorders. Prognosis of these effects is usually good, but since they are dependent on total amount of drug taken into the body, we should recognise them as soon as possible. The incidence of direct toxicity of penicillins is low, but the population exposed is enormous, leading to significant clinical phenomenon.
