Summary | To investigate the service quality in pharmacies of the Northern Greece by measuring patient care and health facility indicators. The patient care indicators and health facility indicators, established by the World Health Organization in 1995 (8), were measured prospectively in 4 pharmacies in Thessaloniki and in 7 pharmacies in Katerini, Greece, during June 2001. A sample of 30 patient-visits was analyzed in each pharmacy. Our study showed that the average drug dispensing time ranged from 55.6 to 410.6 s, and the average dispensing time per item ranged from 37.3 to 150.2 s. The percentage of actually dispensed drugs ranged from 98% to 100%. Patients’ knowledge of a correct dosage ranged from 52.2% to 87.1% and the availability of key drugs ranged from 73% to 100%. There was serious negligence in labeling the dispensed drugs: percentage of adequately labeled drugs according to the WHO recommendations ranged from 0% to 23.3%. The copy of the Essential Drugs List was not available In any of the investigated pharmacies. The quality of work of the investigated pharmacies in Northern Greece was not high enough and should be increased. The pharmacists should: (a) label dispensed drugs properly, (b) give more detailed and precise information about drug use to the patients and (c) be introduced with WHO concept of the essential drugs. | |
