Περίληψη – Summary Liposomes are vésicules enclosed by a bimolecular layer of phospholipids. The structure of liposomes is briefly described as well as the experimental conditions and methods of preparation. These vésicules in the process of formation, are able to entrap water soluble, lipid soluble or amphipathic substances, such as sugars, amino acids, proteins and drugs. In vivo, liposomes exhibit a high affinity for the reticuloendothelial system. They become incorporated into cells by several mechanisms (fusion, endocytosis) depending upon the nature of the liposome and the type of cell. The rate of removal of liposomes from the circulation depends on their size and surface charge. Liposomes as a drug carrier system have opened new perspectives in the therapeutic use of enzymes, hormones, antitumor agents, etc. The problems to be solved before the clinical use of liposomes are discussed.
