Summary Punica granatum L. (Punicaceae) is the pomegranatetree and fruit, known since ancient times and now listed as functional food due to its health beneficial properties. All the pomegranate anatomical compartments: seed, juice, peel, leaf, flower, bark, and roots, have interesting pharmacologic activity. The pomegranate active ingredients: crude fibers, pectin, sugars, calcium, amino acids (glutamic and aspartic acids), polyphenolic flavonoids (mainly anthocyanins), catechins,  tannins (punicalin, punicalagin, gallagic and ellagic acid esters), phytoestrogens (genistein, daid-zein, coumestrol), glycolipids and phospholipids (α-linoleic and α-linolenic acids). Historically, pomegranate ethnomedical uses included the treatment of parasitic infections, ulcers, diarrhoea, dysentery, microbial infections and respiratory pathologies. Currently numerous studies have documented the strong  antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, anti-diabetic and anti-carcinogenic properties of pomegranate considering it  an interesting nutraceutical value alimentary source, involved in the modulation of many pathologies and showing chemopreventive effects against cancer cell lines, both in vitro and in vivo.
