Περίληψη – Summary
The Institute of Medicine in the US (United States) recommended that every cancer survivor should receive a personalised survivorship care plan (SCP). The development of SCPs requires an understanding of the preferences of cancer survivors but also the willingness of the providers to deliver them.
This study aimed to explore the current situation in Cyprus and investigate cancer survivors’ preferences about SCPs. Three hundred and thirteen cancer survivors who attended the oncology department of a general hospital, a cancer survivor rehabilitation centre and the offices of a non-governmental organization (NGO) answered a questionnaire about the delivery and their preferences for SCPs between March and July 2019.
No written SCPs have been given to cancer survivors in Cyprus. Two hundred and seventy-six (88.2%) patients stated that the information was given verbally although two hundred and forty-three patients (77,6%) considered that it would be better if it was printed on paper. This study showed that the vast majority of participants had not received a written SCP although they would appreciate receiving one. The findings may urge the Ministry of Health, health professionals, patient associations, and other relevant bodies to take appropriate actions to address any obstacles faced by professionals and institutions before the SCPs are widely adopted in Cyprus
