Summary | Preclinical trials with laboratory animals on new drugs are necessary to evaluate their therapeutic action and their safety before administering them to man. These studies reveal possible adverse effects and are the basis for the rejection of a large percentage of new chemical entities, preventing subsequent clinical testing. Because there is such a great variation in the bodily functions of different species compared to man, only some species may be suitable for a certain study, while others may be completely unsuitable. This article reviews some of the principles for the selection and maintenance of laboratory animals for preclinical drug testing. | |
