Summary The angiokinetic effects of phentolamine, prazosin and yoximbine in vitro were examined. Experiments were performed on rat thoracic strips suspended in an organ bath solution. Aortic strip ‘s contraction was induced by norepinephrine as well as by potassium chloride (KCI). Phentolamine, a nonselective a- adrenergic blocker, inhibits the contraction caused by norepinephrine as well as by KCI. Prazosin, a selective α1-adrenergic blocker, antagonises norepinephrine, but not potassium chloride, whereas yoximbine, an α2-adrenergic blocker, strongly inhibits contractions induced by potassium chloride, but only slightly the ones induced by norepinephrine. The obtained results display that norepinephrine contracts the rat aorta mainly through activation of a2-adrenergic receptors. On the other hand, a2-adrenergic inhibitors (selectively yoximbine, non selectively phentolamine) can inhibit the entrance of extracellular calcium by blocking, not only the 02- receptors, but also the potential operated channels acting like calcium entrance inhibitors.
