Summary Natural and synthetic fragrances are the allergens most frequently found in contact dermititis caused by perfumes and cosmetics. The various areas of the skin usually affected are face, eyelids, hands and neck. The majority of fragrance side effects are due to oak’s moss, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol and geraniol. The cosmetic-related dermatitis is caused by skin care products, followed by deodorants, nail cosmetics, perfumes and hair cosmetics. The ingredients responsible for contact dermititis to fragrances and cosmetics must be determined by using patch test mixes in adequate concentrations and number. For this purpose an international regulation has been started by Research Institut for Fragrance Materials and is being controlled by International Fragrance Research Association. The prevention from contact dermatitis to fragrances requires certain precautions such as (a) the use of cosmetics without fragrance or perfume (hypoallergenic cosmetics); (b) the application of perfumes should be done only on the clothes of the subjects, who show moderate sensitivity, to exclude clinical manifestations induced by a. perfumed atmosphere; (c) the non use of spices and foods containing fragrances. Contact dermatitis to perfumes and cosmetics are now less frequently encountered due to a close international collaboration between Institutions and pharmaceutical industry.
