Summary The effect of testosterone (T), androstenedione (AND) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – 2 mg/kg/day on 5 consecutive days in orchidectomized rats, plus 2 mg/kg before unilateral adrenalectomy (U.A.) in orchidectomized unilaterally adrenalcetomized rats – was studied in relation to adrenal growth, seminal vesicles, weight and conditioned avoidance learning (CAL) after two way shuttle box avoidance assays of 60 trials/day on three consecutive days. In untreated unilaterally adrenalectomized and sham operated rats CAL was studied in relation to serum testosterone, measured by HIA, after the third day avoidance assay, 10 days post U.A. None of the three androgens affected CAL significantly and adrenal weight compared to controls in orchidectomized rats. In orchidectomized rats after U.A., DHT improved CAL compared to T and control rats only in respect with criterion. In contrast T affected CAL negatively in 4 parameters studied and decreased the growth of the remaining adrenals. Seminal vesicles weight was increased by each treatment (in decreasing order DHT. T, AND). In untreated rats T and seminal vesicles were decreased, while CAL was improved after U.A. The results appear to indicate that: (1) endogenous and exogenous T is negatively related to CAL only after U.A.; (2) of the three androgens studied, only T reduces CAL and the adrenal growth after U.S., which suggests a specific interaction.
