Summary | Ninety-nine patients (78% male, median age 61, range 24-79 years) were followed up after cardiac surgery in a large hospital in Athens, Greece, in order to study their psychosocial problems. The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was administered before surgery and six weeks after discharge. Scores before surgery were not associated with sociodemographic factors. The mean score fell (p< 0.0001) from 18.5 (sd 7.2) to 11.4 (sd 6.7); the latter is not significantly different from Greek controls. Individual symptoms, that did not improve, were 5 (I had trouble keeping my mind on what I was doing), 6 (felt depressed), 9 (thought my life had been a failure), 10 (felt fearful), 14 (felt lonely) and 18 (felt sad). The overall improvement was largely accounted for by the positively worded items, I felt that I was just as good as other people, I was happy and I enjoyed life. | |
